Invited talk on Workshop Konünwenu 2019 at UFRO

        On 26th september 2019, Dr. So Fujiyoshi gave a talk “Bioinformatics in Microbiome Analysis” on the workshop of “Konünwenu 2019” (link) held at University of La Frontera (UFRO).          The workshop was held by Centro de Excelencia de Modelación y Computación Científica (CEMCC), University of La Frontera. The title of the workshop “Konünwenu” means “Entrance to Cosmos” of Mapudungun (the language of the Mapuche people). Seminar of three Japanese professors at Castro, Chiloé

    At the beginning of September 2019, we invited three professors to Chile, Dr. Yoshihiro Ito (associate professor of Kyoto University, Disaster Prevention Research Institute; link), Dr. Kei Yoshimura (professor of the University of Tokyo, Institute of Industrial Science; link), and Dr. Shinji Nakaoka (lecturer of Hokkaido University, Graduate School of Life Sciences; link), to present lectures to Chilean communities. Introducing our project to high school students in Pitrufquén

On June 4, 2019, an outreach activity for high school students in Pitrufuquén, co-sponsored by the Scientific and Technological Bioresource Nucleus (BIOREN) in La Frontera University (UFRO) was held. Pitrufuquén is a city about 30 km south from UFRO. The audience of this lecture was approximately 150 high school students of Complejo Educacional Monseñor Guillermo Hartl in Pitrufquén. During the lecture, Dr. Jacqulienne Acuña acted as a moderator. Visit to Dr. Shiraishi hatchery in Coyhaique

May 7th, 2019, Prof. Gonzalo Gajardo (Universidad de Los Lagos), Dr. Fumito Maruyama (Kyoto University) and Dr. So Fujiyoshi (Kyoto University) visited the Dr. Shiraishi Hatchery managed by Los Lagos University, located close to the city (10 min by car) of Coyhaique, Aysén Region, at the mouth of river Claro in Simpson River. Established in 1976 thanks to Japanese and Chilean technical cooperation, this center pioneered the adaptation of salmon from the Northern hemisphere to Chile (*1). Visiting University of Antofagasta

On May 13, 2019, Dr. Nagai and Dr. Yarimizu visited Professor Carlos Riquelmé at the University of Antofagasta. University of Antofagasta is one of the four core institutes of SATREPS-MACH project and Professor Riquelmé is the Research Associate Director of the project. As a part of the special lecture of the Professor Riquelmé’s class, Dr. Nagai gave a lecture for the students. SATREPS-MACH seminar held at IFOP-CREAN

On May 8, 2019, Dr. Maruyama, Dr. Nagai, and Dr. Fujiyoshi visited IFOP-CREAN to hold a SATREPS-MACH seminar for CREAN employees. The purpose of the seminar was to introduce the SATREPS-MACH project and networking between SATREPS-MACH members of Japan and the employees of CREAN. Many IFOP employees participated in this seminar. The lecture was organized in three parts: First, Professor Maruyama gave the overview of SATREPS-MACH project followed by IFOP’s lab assistant Jonathan Vilugrón for explaining the actual activities being carried out in Chile for the project, and finally Professor Nagai presented Dinophysis and its toxins associated with harmful algae blooms. Workshop organized at city of Osorno

On May 3rd, 2019 Universidad de Los Lagos (ULAGOS) and our project MACH jointly organized “1st Workshop: Biotechnological Challenge and Improvements for Sustainable Aquaculture in The X Region”.   In the workshop attended by the Vice Dean of Research, Dr. Sandra Ríos, Dr. Fumito Maruyama (Kyoto University), Prof. Milko Jorquera (Universidad de La Frontera), Dr. Cristian Segura (INTEMIT) and Dr. Leonardo Guzmán (Instituto de Fomento Pesquero) from MACH Project had presentations (Project map). Field work was developed in the IFOP-CREAN facilities by MACH-SATREPS lab assistant Joaquin Rilling

On March 5th (Tuesday) 2019 field work was developed in the IFOP-CREAN facilities by MACH-SATREPS lab assistant Mr. Joaquin Rilling (assigned to assist Dr. So Fujiyoshi in UFRO). The field work developed consisted in the detection of Alexandrium catenella in water DNA samples collected from Los Lagos Region through Loop-mediated isothermal DNA amplification (LAMP). The methodology applied required Mr. Rilling to travel personally to Puerto Montt to bring both the suitcase lab where the equipment (Kaneka LAMP detector) its contained, and to use it due to his expertise.
